I recently heard a quote that really gave me a renewed passion for fostering and caring for my own mental health. An unknown author once said, "You spend most of your life in your head, so make it a nice place to be."
They're wise words, aren't they?
So my mind has been pondering the question, "How exactly do I make my mind a nice place to be?"
Dr. Brené Brown is an amazing author and researcher who has devoted her career to researching topics like shame, fear, vulnerability, courage, and empathy. Brené can offer some amazing insights, backed by decades of scientific study, into the world of mental health.
I was recently watching an interview of Brené that was on YouTube and she shared a few really thoughtful insights into why we should focus on self-acceptance.
“I don’t think you can truly change for the better, in a lasting meaningful way, unless it is driven by self-acceptance.”
–Brené Brown
So how do we change? I am SOOO glad you asked!
I think the real take-away for me, was that what I have been doing--while it has worked for a season, won't continue to work forever.
"Beating the shit out of yourself for performance, will work for a season, but it won’t provide any long term change."
–Brené Brown
Sometimes we hit a fork in the road, a pause in a season, or a health challenge because God is trying to tell us SOMETHING NEEDS TO CHANGE!
I know this is the case for me right now, and has been the case for me in many other seasons of life. It really stinks in that moment, but just remember what God tells us...
"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose."
–Romans 8:28, NIV
